Mayor Lou Barletta: Pretending to be Mad

Mayor Lou Barletta

A few days ago, Mayor Lou Barletta and his people released a press statement blasting Representative Paul Kanjorski for not accepting a challenge, issued by Barletta last week, to hold a series of several debates.  “This week, during a ‘district work period,’ Kanjorski could have made himself available, yet he still offers excuses as to why he will not debate Mayor Barletta,” the statement read.  All of this outrage on Barletta’s part, however, is nothing but a sad attempt at theatrics.

Why do I say that?  Well, first of all, I find it amusing that after going until June without addressing any real political issues, Mayor Lou Barletta is now chomping at the bit to debate the issues.  These are the same topics which Barletta ran away from, at every opportunity, for months.  So all of this hot air that Barletta is blowing now about wanting to debate the issues is just that; Hot air.

Additionally, who is Barletta to set all of the terms for the debates?  Mayor Barletta issued a letter to Kanjorski outlining all of these debates that he wanted to hold and then, after only a week, Barletta is on the war path because Kanjorski has yet to say, “Oh, certainly Lord Barletta, we’ll do whatever you want.”  Anyone who knows anything about Lou Barletta knows that he is an egotistical bully, who is used to getting his way (at least in Hazleton), and this is just another example of that.

Finally, Barletta himself hasn’t, in my mind, addressed the issues in a satisfactory way, yet.  He released a series of poorly produced amateur videos on YouTube where he ranted about various topics, throwing out ideas that, for the most part, were old and unoriginal.  He also failed to explain how he would fund most of these ideas.  If this, a bunch of crappy home made movies, is what Barletta feels is “addressing the issues,” then Lou Barletta is even less intelligent than I originally thought.

I do think that Barletta and Kanjorski should debate, and the more debates they hold, the better.  However, Lou Barletta is in no position to be setting the terms for the debate.  He has, himself, not yet addressed all of these issues, unless you count his YouTube rants.  I do not.  Lou Barletta should focus more on explaining, in detail, his positions before he demands to debate his opponent’s positions.  And, no, Lou Barletta should NOT be elected to the United States Congress.
